Dear friends,

This is the annual report for the Romanian Education Foundation (REF) for 2014. REF’s mission is to improve educational access, which it does primarily by paying for students’ college entrance exams. REF is now in its 21st year, thanks to the generous support of over 90 invididual donors.

In 2014 we received donations from 5 individuals. These allowed us to pay for 6 students’ undergraduate and graduate entrance exams. You can read their profiles on our Alumni page.

We are especially pleased by the donations received from REF alumni, who are now helping a new generation of students. We are encouraged at having received donations from 35 of the 135 students REF has helped in the past.

A full financial report covering January 1995 – December 2014 is available below.

In November 2014, REF completed the process of becoming a 501(c)(3) federal tax-exempt organization. Prior to that, REF was recognized as a non-profit by the state of California. Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP provided REF with pro bono assistance with incorporation in California and with filing a 501(c)(3) application with the IRS and even paid all of our filing fees. We are grateful to CWT partner David Miller and paralegal Carrie Slaton for their help, which will allow REF to help a greater number of students in the future. This will allow our supporters to make tax-exempt donations, allow their corporate employers to make matching donations, and give us the possibility of applying for grants in the future.

Our plan is to raise at least $5,000 in 2015, so that we can help 15 students this year. As several of our alumni have expressed interest in mentoring future generations of students, in 2015 we also plan to set up a program to connect younger applicants with students and professionals in their fields.

You can help us by spreading the word about REF to qualified students who might benefit from our assistance or sharing your ideas about how we can improve.

You can also help us by making a tax-exempt donation here. Any donation, however small, is appreciated and accepted with gratitude.

Good luck,

Mihai, Andrei, Andy Popovici
